Trying to save electricity without watching consumption makes it difficult to know whether changes are having an effect.

Compare electricity use over similar periods where possible rather than looking only at the dollar amount of the bill. Tariffs and prices can change even when household consumption does not.

If your retailer provides daily or interval usage information, examine patterns. A sharp rise during very hot or cold weather may point to heating and cooling. Consistently high overnight consumption may justify investigating equipment that runs continuously.

Measure consumption, not just cost.
A lower bill can result from a lower tariff, a rebate or a shorter billing period. Electricity consumption measured in kilowatt-hours gives you a clearer picture of whether the household is actually using less electricity.
